Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Cusipata – Rainbow Mountain
Our adventure kicks off at 4:00 am when we pick you up right at your accommodation. Settle into our private, comfortable transport, complete with cozy blankets, as we embark on a three-hour journey towards the Southern Valley of Cusco. Despite the early start, feel free to catch some extra sleep along the way.
As we travel, enjoy the scenic views of traditional Andean villages, ancient Inca terraces, fertile valleys, and rolling mountains. We’ll stop to observe herds of llamas and alpacas, where you can relax and enjoy a nourishing continental breakfast before starting the hike.
Our journey continues to the trailhead at 4,630 meters (15,190 feet), where we’ll begin our trek along a winding path that follows a picturesque stream through the Andes. As you ascend, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the majestic Ausangate Mountain (6,372 meters / 20,905 feet), a sacred peak revered by the Andean people.
This remote region is home to local communities who maintain a vibrant connection to their heritage. You’ll see people working the land and wearing traditional clothing they create using inherited textile skills. Your guide will share insights into the cultural significance of these garments and, if you’re interested, teach you a few words in Quechua, the native language that has survived since Inca times.
After an hour and a half of hiking, we’ll arrive at the spectacular Rainbow Mountain of Cusco (5,100 meters / 16,732 feet). Take time to admire this extraordinary natural wonder, marveling at its vibrant colors as your guide shares fascinating theories about its origins. Whether you’re capturing the view with photos or simply soaking in the moment, we’ll spend about 30 minutes to an hour at the summit, depending on your pace and the weather.
Next, we’ll head towards the mesmerizing Red Valley (5,050 meters / 16,568 feet), a surreal landscape that feels otherworldly and sees few visitors. In just 30 minutes, we’ll reach a viewpoint offering stunning panoramic views, surrounded by absolute tranquility.
Our descent back to the trailhead takes around two hours, passing ancient Andean villages and herds of llamas along the way. With a bit of luck, you might even spot some vicuñas, wild animals that have lived alongside Peruvians since before the Incas.
Afterwards, we’ll head to a local restaurant in Cusipata for a delicious buffet lunch. Finally, our private transport will bring you back to Cusco, where we’ll drop you off at your accommodation, ready to rest after an unforgettable day.
